for Ugubhu and Voice transcribed from the performance of Mntwana Princess Magogo kaDinizulu by Khanyisile Peterson |
“Princess Magogo learned this song in her youth but she does not know who composed it. She considers it to be quite old, and to have originated from the Zulu clan. It is classified as an umlolozelo or ‘children’s song. Although some Zulu lullabies have soothing words, addressed to the baby, there are many, like this one, in which the mother (or aunt) seems to be expressing her private thoughts rather than consoling the child” (Rycroft, 1976).
