Mr Lucas Mafogo played the Dipela (Pedi for an Mbira or thumb-piano) for Dave Dargie during Dargie’s documentation of music in Limpopo, the Northern province of South Africa in 1988. Dargie was impressed by Mr Mafogo’s sound describing his Dipela performances as having a ‘strong and almost earthy sound’.
